Ducks sign Sutherby

June 25th, 2008, 4:48 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Dan Wood, Staff writer

The Ducks on Wednesday announced the signing of veteran center Brian Sutherby to a one-year contract worth $700,000.

Sutherby, 26, stood to become a restricted free agent Tuesday.

The Ducks acquired Sutherby from the Washington Capitals in a November trade for a second-round pick in the 2009 NHL entry draft. Sutherby appeared in a combined 50 games with the Ducks and Capitals last season, recording one goal, an assist and 64 penalty minutes.

Sutherby also appeared in five Stanley Cup playoff games during the Ducks’ opening-round loss to the Dallas Stars, going scoreless.

The Ducks also announced that they have extended qualifying offers to right wing Corey Perry and minor-leaguers Drew Miller, Geoff Platt, Jason King and Stephen Dixon. Each stands to become a restricted free agent Tuesday.

Unable to sign him until then because of salary cap-related issues, the Ducks plan to try to reach a deal with Perry as soon as possible after free-agency season begins Tuesday. Perry led the Ducks with 29 goals last season.

The Ducks did not qualify minor-leaguers Gerald Coleman and Shane Hynes.
