Ducks to formally charge Oilers with tampering

July 11th, 2008, 2:02 pm · 17 Comments · posted by Dan Wood, Staff writer

One day after suggesting that the NHL look into a potential Edmonton Oilers tampering violation regarding right wing Corey Perry, General Manager Brian Burke said Friday that the Ducks will file a formal charge with the league.

Reached earlier Friday via E-mail, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the league “would need to receive a formal charge with supporting rationale” before launching any tampering investigation.

Burke confirmed that the Ducks intend to submit just such a formal request either later Friday or Monday.

Burke said during a Thursday conference call with Ducks beat reporters that the club had “asked” the NHL “to make a full investigation” into whether a July 4 comment by Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe constituted tampering.

“Corey Perry is a hell of a player,” Lowe said during an interview with Edmonton’s Team 1260 radio. “What I really want to say about his (Burke’s) bickering about parity and the salary cap is if you’re unhappy about them, then trade him (Perry) our way. We’ll be glad to have him.”

Lowe, responding to ongoing criticism from Burke dating back to the Oilers’ signing of former Ducks winger Dustin Penner last summer, made several stinging remarks toward Burke and the Ducks during the radio interview and in subsequent conversations with Edmonton newspaper reporters.

Burke was also unhappy with a Lowe comment hinting that the Ducks had done something untoward during their 2005 courtship of unrestricted free-agent defenseman Scott Niedermayer, who ultimately left the New Jersey Devils to join the Ducks. Burke had asked the NHL to investigate that matter, with the expectation that the Ducks would be exonerated of any misconduct.

“I don’t anticipate having to look into the circumstances surrounding the Niedermayer signing,” Daly said.

The Oilers, through a team spokesman, declined comment.

  • Kevin Lowe says:

What!?! I’m being brought up on tampering charges by this moron!?! But I was only kidding! Ah, man!

Thank God I’m a legend in this town or I would have been fired years ago!

  • Jim says:

Here’s an idea. While Brian Burke is on the phone with the NHL, why doesn’t he also ask them how Chris Pronger only received a ONE GAME SUSPENSION for his SECOND OFFENSE in the 07 playoffs? Or does Mr. Burke only object to unfair treatment that doesn’t benefit his team? The Ducks are the whiniest team in the NHL, especially now that the NHL is doing them any more favors.

  • Erin says:

Jim MUST be a bitter Kings fan :)

  • Nikki says:

Agreed, Jim is either a Kings fan or just ignorant.

  • Keith says:

Burke is an idiot for even thinking this is possibly going to go anywhere. He’s trying to be bigger than Gary Bettman and will stop at nothing to be in the limelight. I don’t like the comments from either team, but this is absolutely ridiculous. Go figure, he’s a lawyer.

  • Russia says:

Nope he’s an Oilers fan and meanwhile before I get plunged here I gotta to admit that what Burke is doing to this organization is pretty classless to me. As a Ducks fan I should be ashamed of him and the taunting that he’s been doing for the past year. I mean both sides are being ridiculous but more so to Burke. He can’t shut his mouth even to save his own life. Shut the HELL UP BURKE!!! You’re making us idiots in the whole entire NHL fanbase ‘ya dimwit!

  • Rollie says:

What an insult and what the f#%#?k is Burkes problem,,,,,,besides the Penner signing…Was he not happy as a kid at X-mas by sending the last piece of the Stanley cup winning puzzle with Chris Pronger?
I hope Kevin retaliates with Slander or Libel with almost all the newspapers writing quotes aimed at Mr. Lowe by Brian.

  • DuxxGirl95 says:

Kings suck and so does Lowe.

I’m GLAD Burke is stepping up and formally charging Lowe. It will teach Lowe to keep his big trap shut. I hope Lowe gets nailed hard-core for everything they charge him with. Then I hope they kick Lowe out of the NHL permanently.

  • Ted says:

And Erin must be a clueless Ducks fan :)

  • [...] Ducks will formally file tampering charges against the Oilers over Ducks forward Corey [...]

  • Merlin9 says:

Brian Burke is out of his mind! Is he going senile? If Gary Bettman and the rest of the NHL executive even entertains this idea, they will earn even less respect.
Brian Burke give it up already!
    Oiler fan

  • Just some guy says:

Um, I don’t get the tampering charge. This was not a case where a GM (Lowe) had direct contact with a signed player (Perry). This was a statement from one GM (Lowe) to another GM (Burke). If this is considered tampering, than anytime a GM gets together with another GM to discuss a trade, that should then also be tampering should it not? What about Burke’s threat last year to send an offersheet to Stoll in revenge for the Penner offer sheet? Wouldn’t that be tampering as well?

  • Frank says:

Hmm lets see what the Ducks fans say when at the end of the copming year they only have 7 players signed and the rest follow Burke out of town.

It was nice of Burke to give Bertuzzi that big contract last year almost like he owed him something (see Steve Moore)

  • Palooza says:

Good point Frank, hadn’t thought of that.

Looks like Burke will leave the Mighty Ducks not so mighty when he bails this year. Kinda like he left the Canucks……

  • Pat says:

Keith, Burke is not trying to be bigger than Bettman, I have a sleeve of golf balls bigger than Bettman

  • Keith says:

LOL! You are correct Pat. Well played. Four!
