Sunday night’s 4-3, overtime victory over the Vancouver Canucks at GM Place enabled the Ducks to wrap up their exhibition schedule with a 6-1-1 record, the best in franchise history.
The club had previously posted only two winning exhibition campaigns, 4-2-1 in 2003 and 3-2-3 in 2006.
Defenseman Nathan McIver, whom the Ducks obtained from Vancouver in a Friday waiver claim, scored the decisive goal, 22 seconds into overtime. Another former Canuck, Brendan Morrison, opened the scoring for the Ducks, who also received goals from Corey Perry and Travis Moen. Perry added two assists.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere registered 27 saves for the Ducks in his final tune-up for Thursday’s regular-season opener, on the road against the San Jose Sharks.
The Ducks will return to practice Tuesday after getting a day off Monday.
With left wing Brad Larsen set to open the season on the injured-reserve list after having undergone sports-hernia surgery Friday, the Ducks must trim at least one more player from their roster in order to reach the regular-season limit of 23. The club is more likely to open the regular season with 22 players.
Coach Randy Carlyle is also expected to name the team’s captain, probably Tuesday.
