Hiller, Rob Niedermayer in for Ducks

November 19th, 2008, 12:10 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Dan Wood, Staff writer

While coach Randy Carlyle would never say so publicly, all appearances at the morning skate were that goaltender Jonas Hiller will again be in net Wednesday night, when the Ducks face reigning Hart Trophy winner Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals at Honda Center.

Veteran right wing Rob Niedermayer, meanwhile, is expected to be back in the lineup after having been a healthy scratch Sunday, when Hiller and the Ducks blanked the visiting Kings, 2-0.

Hiller registered 29 saves against the Kings to post his first career shutout. Over his past two starts, including a 5-2 triumph over the visiting St. Louis Blues on Nov. 5, Hiller has surrendered only two goals on 61 shots. He has stopped 85 of 90 shots in his past four appearances, two of which came in relief of Jean-Sebastien Giguere.

Hiller, who has not started consecutive games this season, is 3-1-1 with a 2.18 goals-against average and .926 save percentage. Giguere, meanwhile, has been “up and down,” by his own admission, while going 7-6-1 with 3.12 and .905 numbers this season.

Niedermayer, a checking-line fixture the past three-plus seasons, had not sat out a game for any reason other than injury since being acquired from the Calgary Flames in 2003. He has three goals, five points and a minus-1 mark in 17 games this season.

Carlyle and Niedermayer met Monday, when the coach conducted a series of regularly scheduled, periodic meetings with players.

“I expect the player to respond,” Carlyle said. “We talked about it. I said what I had to say. He said what he had to say. That’s the way it goes.”
