Poll: What should the Ducks do with Jean-Sebastien Giguere?

Did Jonas Hiller’s performance this season warrant giving him the No.1 goaltender designation for the 2009-10 season? Or do the Ducks give Jean-Sebastien Giguere a chance to start new and take back his No.1 role? Ducks Red Wings Hockey

Perhaps more important, will the Ducks have the financial ability to keep both on board again (Giguere is due to make $6 million in 2009-10 and Hiller $1.3 million) next season?

We won’t know that last answer until this summer. In the meantime, lets ponderĀ …

You need a good Ace in the hole folks. He won you the Cup in 07 almost singlehandedly. So he faught the puck a little this year. That happens to every Keeper and it will with Hiller too. Get rid of GiGuere and you won’t make the playoffs next year. Gauranteed. Does’nt matter how good your second and third lines are if you’re not solid at Keeper.

    • MIke Hawk says:

Not true you just know with 2ndline scoring we would beat the wings, you are a piece of work. Like you have the ducks interest in mind. Beat it Octopussy!

  • Matt says:

I picked wait and see, but ultimately, he’s going to have to fight Hiller for the number one spot he gets paid for.

If he loses, he’ll probably the most well paid backup ever.

  • BOB says:

If he loses, he won’t be here because he has stated that he is not willing to be a back up goaltender

  • Ray says:

“He won you the Cup in 07 almost singlehandedly”

That’s Laughable. Yes, he played well in 2007, but he didn’t play above and beyond. He played like a top 10 goalie… but not off-the-hook save the game good. (He did that in 2003)

He’s got to be moved. He makes FAR too much for his level of performance. That means we can keep our D together and improve our 2nd line scoring with the salary saved.

He can’t stay. Now is when he gets moved for some young talent, and we use the salary savings on some UFAs.

  • Nick says:

Well, I’m sure they can try and work out a half and half thing for the season, since I’m not too sure if Hillsy can play a majority of a season.

I’d definitely keep Giguere though, since he is a fantastic goaltender who just had a bad year. I’d expect him to return to form next season.

However, I don’t have a problem trading him if that gives up cap space to re-sign Wiz, Beauch, Todd, Scotty and Robby, and Brown, and get maybe a good left-handed shot player, some picks and prospects.

    • MIke Hawk says:

Wrong Hiller much cheaper alternative, resign some guys get 2nd line scoring, setp closer and mybe all the way to the cup. Jiggy wants to stay it back up or even waiver wire.

  • schlonger says:

keep Giggy, pay him a fortune to sit on the bench, that way you won’t have any money left to sign your goons!

    bwaaaaahaaaaaaaralph

Don’t forget to strap your chinstrap befor you walk to the special adult education camp, de de de!

Hi Mikey! Sure is nice dialogueing with the GREAT Hawks fans. They really know their hockey and don’t have to use the name calling to mask their ignorance. Graceful in defeat too. They don’t whine and blame the refs. Guess your wisdom about the Duckettes wearing the Wings down wasn’t very accurite. Getting ready for the Finals here. Up 2-0 already. Seeing any Ducks on the Links yet? Or is there too much smoke there for golfing. Most of which is coming from your @$$>
        I love you, Peace…

So what, I’m over it. Yeah right check the comments on Yahoo sports, no love fest. Unlike you I played hockey!
You were around in the 70′? What about the Broad Steet Bullies?
You got Alzheimers combined with alltimers, oldtimer.
You got lucky Campbell got greedy and stupid today.
But yeah your team played solid so, congrats.
Looks like it’s up to the Pens to get revenge, maybe, we’ll see in Chicago.

  • Alex says:

    schlonger… how old are you, 10? Whatever…

It would be insane to keep Giguere if he’s not going to be a starting goalie. Don’t get me wrong, I think J.S. is great but also understand he had a very difficult year. I hope he does very well in the off season.

The organization has to do what is best for the team. I would hate to see Giguere leave, but I would hate it more to see the team fail. I guess I can try to understand and say we’ve all had our off years in life. I know he’s got heart, wants to play his heart out but if he takes it too seriously, he’s not enjoying the game. He has it in him to come back and thrive. And Hiller has shown he has it in him too.

But in the end, the team should come first…. how that comes about, is going to be interesting.

  • kimo31 says:

I think the Ducks should wait and see who claims the #1 goalie position coming out of training camp. If Hiller takes the spot then Giguere, because of his salary, should be put on the trading block but if Giggy takes it then Hiller would have to return to the backup role. IMO It doesn’t hurt the team to have 2 top quality NHL goalies unless the backup is making 6 times as much as the #1.

  • JohnP says:

I feel that Jiggy has a lot to give to this team. It’s a shame that ongoing drama in his personal life are pouring over into his professional life BUT it’s not like he’s creating the problems. His son, his father, and now another child coming in July. I don’t think there is anything wrong with Jiggy as a #1 (if he can earn it) and Hiller as a back-up for a second year. Remember Emery…he was an outstanding goaltender…then the Ducks figured him out and he couldn’t do ANYTHING in the NHL again. Hiller is too new to throw an entire team on his shoulders regardless of his performance since March. Take a page from Detroit Hasek and Osgood…it doesn’t hurt to have two better than good goalies on your team….I’m just worried we’ll end up like LA playing the goalie shuffle for 5+ years.

  • Desiree says:

Jiggy had a REALLY bad season and hopefully he will bring his A-game next season. I don’t think it is bad to have 2 good goalies…so long as it doesn’t cause issues with the team keeping other good players, in that case I would rather keep Hiller. As much as I like Jiggy, he has seemed distracted and it affects the team as a whole in the long run. It hasn’t been just this season that he has been like this…it seems like every other season he has a slump or isn’t up to par….

  • Steben says:

I dunno I guess you can be insensitive and try and convince someone whose reason for being at this level died this year, that he should waive his no trade clause. But one could point out that he didn’t actually give up any goals for the short time he was in net. Next year should be better he has had bad years before and always bounced back.

  • C says:

Trade him and take him off books so we can afford to bring back our team and maybe add a 2nd line center.

  • Alex says:

Look I feel for someone going through personal problems, having them spill over into the work place but there is a limit with it. It just sucks and my heart goes out to him.

Dealing with someone’s short comings with sensitivity is okay if you’re talking about a bunch of 10 year old who paid to play baseball during the summer. You have one kid who isn’t too good but that’s alright, its for fun. But the purpose of this NHL, the Anaheim Ducks is to win and win the Stanley Cup.

The entire organization is going to be diminished because of Jiggy’s contract as a starting goalie; a position he lost fair and square. Its going to be a rough start next season to say that least if something isn’t worked out. I was a big fan of Giguere, still think he’s a great person but apples and oranges.

As a season ticket holder, I want to have a winning team that spends its salary responsibly. I always thought his contract was outrageous both for pay and his no trade clause. And it finally backfired on the Ducks. They should be focusing on winning the Stanley Cup next season, not struggling to make the play offs.

Spend the money we pay for tickets wisely Mr. Murray.

    • Steben says:

I know what you mean but really he only leaves if he wants to. So if he wants to stay he does. But I wonder if someone could pick him up on waivers? and then I wonder if anyone would for that price. Probably not.

    • Kimo says:

Given what Giguere did for the team in the run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2003 he earned his big contract. His performance put him up with the elite goalies in the NHL and that was a reasonable contract at the time.
Unfortunately he didn’t play up to the contract this past season but that is the danger of long term contracts. IMO it would be better for both the players and the teams if contracts were kept at 2-4 years with performance based bonuses and lower base salaries.
As it is now, players are given contracts based upon their PREVIOUS performance and some players only seem to bring their “A” game when they are in a contract year like Khabibulin for example. He played great in helping Tampa win a Cup then took the big FA contract to go to Chicago and now, guess what?, he is in a contract year again as he has helped the Blackhawks to the Western Conference Finals. Whoever signs him in the offseason needs to load his contract with performance bonuses so that he will have more of an incentive to play well every year.

  • schlonger says:

    ohhh, you dumb Anahiem Dicks,

wallow in your pity pot all summer! bang your heads against the wall and try to figure it out!

nothing you can do, except gut the franchise and start all over!

you better realize it, you’re in denial!

  • schlonger says:

“As a season ticket holder, I want to have a winning team”

    hahaaaaaahaaaaa!

    loser!

  • schlonger says:

“They should be focusing on winning the Stanley Cup next season, not struggling to make the play offs.”

Alex, you’re an idiot. Do you actually think your Dicks will win the Cup next year? They will struggle to make the playoffs you loser!

get used to it! bottom feeders!

doesn’t it suck to be you?

  • ducks54 says:

I’ve always loved Jiggy, always will. If he can pick up his performance in training camp and the pre-season, I think he should stay as #1 goalie, with Hiller as backup. Jonas was outstanding in the playoff run, don’t get me wrong, but he’s still relatively new and we know he can has his off games as well.

However, if Scotty does come back next year, having Jiggy is going to be pricey and I’m just hoping Murray will figure out a way to bring back guys like Wiz, Beauch, and Brown.

    Just my two cents…
