Having a beer at a hockey game, or any sports event, has long been a universal pleasure for fans.
Honda Center officials intended to enhance that this season when they re-configured the cup holders at the arena, but apparently it’s literally rubbing some fans the wrong way.
Instead of having the cup holders attached to the backs of the seats like some stadiums and arenas (right), the new design places the cup holder as part of the armrest.
Some fans have reported that this is a space invader that makes it difficult to maneuver in and around the seats and sometimes causing the accidental bumping of said beverage.
Evidently it has spilled over into a minor controversy.
Read one post on the Ducks’ message board, “I hate them! You have no room for your arms! I keep putting my drink on the floor cause it’s either knock the drink out of the cup holder because I want an arm rest, or sit with my hands in my lap the whole time. So annoying.”
There were fans who reported they didn’t have an issue with it. In either case, arena officials are aware that there’s a lot of cup talk, and that it has nothing to do with Lord Stanley.
“We’ve received a lot of positive feedback as well as some concerns, and we’re working through the issues with our season seat holders,” said Tim Ryan, president and chief executive, Anaheim Arena Management, through a spokeswoman.
if you don’t like them, grab them and pull forward.
they come right off.
Take both of them and use them as loud plastic ‘Thunder Sticks’.
I don’t see their location as being as big of a problem as their design. They don’t fit anything but large cups, so if you place a smaller cup (or bottled beverage) in them you are actually more likely to spill your drink, expect now it spills all over you instead of the floor.
At least they have gone back to giving you a cap with your bottled drinks, that will stop some of the spills.
I agree with Clippin Wings about the design–they aren’t deep enough. I’ve already seen four instances with drinks spilled from the cup holders because they are too shallow.
They do cramp the larger Duck fan. Take a look at my husband at the season opener–not too cozy

That pic’s a bit misleading. Your husband would look more comfortable actually using the armrests as armrests, rather than trying to cram his arms down in between them. That’s just weird.
I’m larger than that guy and I didn’t have a problem. People love to complain.
Please do tell how her husband would have used that as an arm rest if he had a drink sitting in there. Yeah, exactly.
Oh, I’m not complaining. I would sit on an active beehive to watch the Ducks play. Just making an observation….
Were you up in section 433 doing that at the home opener? Definately loud LOL. Could be used to drown out loud Detroit or Red Wings fans…. keep that in mind!
I like to lean forward and put my elbows on the edge of the arm rests, or used to. But its something easy to get used to, they’re fine.
I’ve heard people who are generously built (to put it mildly) complain through the preseason. I’m average and I can still get in and out of the seats. But if someone is getting stuck, time to get in shape!
Yeah, only fat people dislike the cupholders. Makes so much sense. I suppose I should work out until my arms are short enough to use the arm rest AND the cup holder at the same time.
Erin, yes it does make sense! BECAUSE if you read carefully and understood, you would see that I was referring to those specific large people (fat people as you said) who were complaining about their situation at pre-season games.
I never said that no one else found them annoying. When reading, please make an attempt to read what is being said and save the dramatics and hypersenstive reactions for those who can best appreciate it.
This falls into the category of, “If that’s all you have to complain about, things can’t be all that bad.”
I go to every game and let me tell you it’s not a nice feeling to go to every game and not have anywhere to put your arms if you want to actually use the cup holder. It was a waste of money. They don’t even hold drinks properly. You’d think they would actually check to see if the cups fit before they put all of them in.
You’ve got to be kidding me. The cupholder is at the tip of the arm rest. The old armrests weren’t even this long. I’d be surprised if there was even 1 inch less of useable space now compared to before.
Yes they are longer than the regular armrests; but when you put a drink in them, your arms can’t hang off because there’s a drink in the way hanging Nd tilting out of the damn cup holder cause they don’t fit. Whatever if you like them, but don’t be so immature and act like no one else should have a different opinion. And to whoever said that they will change it for season ticket holders, thanks for the heads up.
What is annoying is that one of us might have to sit next to someone who complains about that instead of paying attention to the game. Deal with it or become a Kings fan.
I think they’re great!! i dont’ use them to hold drinks, but to hold my cellphone, so I can text my friends throughout the arena.
I got a call from the Ducks yesterday and they are removing the cupholders from my season seats and replacing them with the old armrests. If you’re a season ticket holder and don’t like the darn things, call your sales rep and ask to have them removed.
I got a call from somebody with the Ducks and said I would like what they are going to do with the Cup holder. She left a message for me at work, so I could not talk to her.
I called her back and she did not call me back. I have a issue with them. I can not jump up and celebrate the goals without knocking over my drink (if I used them to hold my drink) and since I sit on an aisle sit, people trying to get to their seat, have to wait longer for me to get up.
Yes, I am a plus size lady and had no issues before with my seat, until they added these annoying cup holders. I am glad to see some complaints being done.
People are still going to spill their drinks whether they are on the floor or in those lame cup holders.
I am hoping they remove mine. I need to call the representative back again from the Ducks.
Glad they are listening to the season seat holders, good or bad. We spend a lot of hard earned money on our seat(s) and need to be heard.
I’m 6″4″
I have no room for my arms when drinks were in the cup holders.
I’m not going to sit with my arms folded, nor am I going to sit with my arms in my lap the entire game.
Getting up quickly to cheer Whitney’s goal was not an option. Drinks would have been spilled on both sides.
I’ve had season tickets every year and have never been to a game where i felt so uncomfortable the entire game.
Clippin Wings is right; with a gentle tug they slide right off, which means it’s just a matter of time before some drunken Kings or Red Wings fan heaves one out onto the ice in the middle of a game. Or, imagine the Metallica concert in December with 17,000 removable cup holders / armrests flying through the air.
Staples Center did this last season. at first I was kind of like.. huh? but at least in the case of that arena, it actually gives more leg (ok foot) room. so, not a bad thing, just took some getting used to. it’s “movie theatre” style, which is how all arenas used to be anyway.
I don’t know who in the world decided they didn’t need to be bolted down, and are thus “removable”. all it takes is a power drill and one simple screw to secure them.
“Some fans have reported that this is a space invader that makes it difficult to maneuver in and around the seats and sometimes causing the accidental bumping of said beverage.”
maybe these are the really *ahem* large fans which are having such a problem. I can’t imagine what the big controversy is all about, other than them coming loose if bumped too hard.
if they’re too big to hold “small” or “medium” drinks, they should have that plastic “X” cross support on the bottom which holds in the smaller sizes. I can’t imagine someplace that would install a cupholder without it in this day and age.
They do, at least where I was sitting.
Still none in the dozens of handicapped seats on the club level, where they wouldn’t bother anyone trying to maneuver around & just might do the most good!
I have to chime in…I hate the darn things…hated them whenever I was fortunate enough to have the company seats in the 300 level too. I never used them there and put my drink on the floor which I will continue to do now in the 400 level. I no more than got to my seat on Saturday, put my drink in the cup holder, turned around to adjust something and down it went. Fortunately, the concession person gave me another ($5) drink to replace it (since I literally had just gotten it, he remembered me). I’m not small but not the largest person either and I also couldn’t jump up to cheer when Whitney scored. I have the bruises to show the other times I got up and down. I will DEFINITELY be contacting my rep. THEY’RE HORRIBLE!
