Sbisa to be re-assigned, Giguere on the mend

October 25th, 2009, 1:05 pm · 24 Comments · posted by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

Some significant quick-hit news from Sunday’s practice …

Defenseman Luca Sbisa will be re-assigned Monday to either his junior team or elsewhere. That means Sbisa, who cannot be re-assigned to the minors because he is under 20, cannot return to the NHL this season.

The 19-year-old was minus-1 with no points in eight games with the Ducks since he arrived from Philadelphia with Joffrey Lupul in a trade for Chris Pronger.

Coach Randy Carlyle said the move, which had been debated among the staff for about two weeks, had more to do with the youngster being saddled with pressure in light of the team’s struggles.

“A lot of it has to do with the way we’re playing right now,” Carlyle said. “We think the young player has come in and played fairly well, but in the situation we’re in right now, but we think it could be a detriment to having him in a pressure situation that we’re in.

The decision was based on we want him to play in the league for 15 years, not for five years … if we can do anything to alleviate the pressure of this year, have him go back and play major junior hockey and do the things that he does well, continue to develop, I think the next step will be a lot easier.”

Captain Scott Niedermayer, who had mentored Sbisa briefly in the preseason,  put it more bluntly when he said,

“I feel bad. I think as a team we kind of let him down. It’s not easy for a young guy like that to be able to handle what’s going on right now on the ice. When things are out of sync and things aren’t going the right way, it’s a lot tougher on a young guy like to fit in. We didn’t give him a good chance.”

Carlyle did not see the need to recall another defenseman for depth purposes. …

Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere did not practice and all but ruled himself out for Monday’s game against Toronto, meaning the Ducks will likely recall former Toronto prospect Justin Pogge from Bakersfield.

“Uh, no, I don’t think so, ” Giguere said when asked if he could play.

“Give it a couple of days rest here, and see what’s going to happen. We’re not too concerned about it, but … we have to give it time and make sure it’s ready.”

Giguere aggravated a groin muscle injury in the waning minutes of Saturday’s game against Columbus when he tried to stop a shot by Fedor Tyutin.

“I didn’t see the puck until the last second, and when I saw it I threw my leg out and my groin let go,” he said. …

The line rushes were …

Joffrey Lupul-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry

Bobby Ryan-Saku Koivu-Teemu Selanne

Petteri Nokelainen-Todd Marchant-Matt Beleskey

Erik Christensen-George Parros-Mike Brown-Evgeny Artyukhin

Sending Sbisa down is the right decision. He’s not gooing to make a difference this year and keeping him will only hurt his development.

  • Darkwing Duck says:

I think Sbisa is getting the short end of the stick. He is a much better skater then Eminger. As far as how we are playing…Too much talent to be bottom feeders in the NHL. Frankie should have never of been traded!! someone needs to stop the bleeding here!

  • czhokej says:

Agreed. He needs more experience. Defensemen take longer to develop.

  • JohnP says:

I’m ok with the Sbisa reassignment. Bobby R took some time in the Minors and AHL and it helped him tremendously (though you wouldn’t know it this season). We have to remember that Sbisa is 19! He’s got a lot to learn and has to develop. As for Jiggy…when does a player get to decide when he plays or doesn’t play??? Eh, I feel ok…I guess I’ll give playing a shot…eh we didn’t to too well…oh well maybe my groin was hurt more than I thought. WTF IS GOING ON IN ANAHEIM!?!?! Nice to see some scoring but the turnovers, the sloppy defensive play, the weak positioning, THE DAMNED DUMP AND CHASE!!! When can this team get away from that!?!?! We’re not a grinding team anymore bottom-line! Use the tools you have…if Randy C can’t adapt to his new team then the team needs a coach that understands the strengths and weaknesses INSTEAD OF trying to force square pegs in round holes!!!! I’M PISSED! as should all ducks fans who give a S#@T about this team.

  • czhokej says:

Our owner should step in, and make some important decisions. We are losing our fan-base, people are not interested in mediocre hockey
(that is still flattering, because very often it is just ugly). If Murray doesn’t want to make any changes, because Carlyle is his friend, somebody should. Ebbett was a prime candidate for a center of the third line, because nobody else can stick-handle the puck on our third and fourth offensive trios (with R2 and Carter being out). That could and should have been our third line. I still think that the Ducks trade away some players who are unhappy with Randy and opened their mouths somewhere.

    • Stephen says:

Unfortunately our owner is not allowed to make any decisions right now.

    • backcheck says:

Hey JohnP & cz, my guess Murph isn’t going to do anything big before the 20 game mark. Totally agree we need we should simplify the D scheme to a traditional inside position/box out style. Just like Pronger was calling for in the playoffs last season against the Wings.

I highly doubt Coach Carlyle is going to change that much. The real question now is does Bob Murray back the Coach all season or….?

  • czhokej says:

Toronto is next and I am already scared!

    • ClippinWings says:

Yeah, I so hope we are not THAT team.

The one that gives TO their first win of the season.

  • Ducks Fan says:

I left a Ducks game early the other night for the first time since the Ducks became a franchise. Enough said.

    • ASeg says:

The only time I left a game early was when I was sick with a stomach thing, otherwise been there from start to finish… until last Saturday.

  • HOckeyguy says:

Sbisa was re-assigned to the AHL Philadelphia Phantoms last year, when he was still with the Flyers. I don’t get how he can’t be assigned again to the AHL. In fact, I doubt he can be sent back to juniors, with all the pro time he’s already logged. Reporter, think you’d better double-check your facts.

    • Curtis Zupke, Staff writer says:

HOckeyguy, thanks for the heads up. I have been told that extraordinary injury circumstances probably allowed Sbisa to go to the AHL last season. I’ll look into it further, but there are “emergency” situations in which the rules can be altered. This is a complicated matter but we’ll try to explain it later.

      • backcheck says:

Under Bettman there’s guidelines for the Flyers, Leafs, Habs, Wings, Bruins & Rangers.

        And rules for everybody else.

      • Kevin Forbes says:

        Hi Curtis,

The emergency situations would be something along the lines of if enough injuries/callups struck that Anaheim could not call up another defenseman without short-handing their minor league teams, they could then call up a junior level player (who is already signed to a contract).

There are restrictions on how long that player can remain on the roster and he has to return to the junior leagues as soon as the problem is resolved.
Two seasons ago, Philadelphia forward Claude Giroux was called up from Gatineau in the QMJHL to play a pair of games with the Flyers after injuries struck and exhausted both the Flyers and their AHL affiliate Phantoms out of warm bodies. Also, Anaheim’s own Jean-Sebastien Giguere made his NHL debut under these circumstances when injuries hit the Hartford Whalers and their minor league players, forcing the Whalers to call up Giguere from his junior team, the Halifax Mooseheads.

Due to the fact that Anaheim has prospects scattered around the AHL and ECHL, it seems unlikely that a return by Sbisa would be the case under these emergency situations. There would have to be a major rash of injuries that affected not just San Antonio and Anaheim, but also Bakersfield and Manitoba (where Salcido is playing).

However, with CHL rules, Sbisa is eligible to rejoin the team after his WHL season is over. So if the team he ends up with in the WHL either fails to make the playoffs or is eliminated early, Sbisa could be eligible for assignment either in the AHL/ECHL or join the Ducks themselves. Last season, Sbisa played a few games with the Philadelphia Phantoms after Lethbridge’s season came to an end. He then played a handful of games with the Flyers during their playoff run.

  • Shaquille.Bzhezinsky says:

I am not sure about Sbisa and not going to discuss his reassignment. I do beleive that a person who really deserves the relegation to the minor ligue (at least for a few weeks) is Giguere. It would serve two purposes:
    1) it would show Ducks fans that if some players do not perform up to expectations, they’ll be demoted REGARDLESS of the status of their contracts.
    2) Rather than sit on the bench, Giguere would get some playing time and, hopefully, would have a chance to regain some of his past form.

    • ClippinWings says:

Too bad Giguere would be claimed off waivers.

I think more importantly Jiggy, once he heels needs to be benched until we have back-to-backs.

      Why?

Teach him that the Team comes before his ego.

His little “I’m 100% healthy” stunt so that he’d get the start against the jackets is inexcusable.

  • ref you suck says:

It is getting frustrating to watch- this is true. The defense is pathetic. You know it’s bad when everyone you know (who goes to Ducks games on a regular basis) is dreading the game tomorrow against the Leafs. A team as crappy as the Leafs coming into our building should be a lock. I’m not so sure we will be celebrating. Something is up with the D. Something is up with the Ducks.

BTW- Check out the stats. We are hurtin’ people. 24th in the NHL- that is 6 away from the bottom of the pile. LA Kings are 2nd. Wake up Anaheim- people don’t want to witness 4 home game losses.

  • ochockeydue says:

I think folks are over reacting when I read “fire the coach”articles. So far the stars haven’t done much, with Getzlaf only finally getting into shape after off season surgery and Koivu not producing much either.

The third line has been re-made and isn’t doing much while the sluggos on the fourth line don’t play much so it doesn’t matter what they do as long as they don’t get scored on.

The recipe is get the top two lines producing (they looked better against Columbus than they have in several games), re-tool the 3rd line during the season (Ebbett wasn’t the answer - obviously neither is Belinsky or Bodie…time for some mid year trades, or perhaps Logan McMillan might be able to play by then), and find someone reliable for Scotty to play D with so he can go back to being the dynamic player he can be rather than having to play two D positions at once.

Lastly, the Ducks need some excellent goaltending, as our tenders this year have been average at best.

  • ASeg says:

Everyone knew Sbisa wasn’t ready…. okay.

Thoughts… defense. Are they going to turn one of many unsigned veteran defensemen out there? Trade away someone? Chelios signed with an AHL team, so that’s out (felt that I was going to vomit typing that)…

  • John says:

IMO Sbisa wasn’t ready for the big show before training camp ever started. Being sent down will help him.

  • Pali says:

Sbisa as of right now is better than Eminger, Boynton, and Brookbank although he may not bring the toughness aspect of Brookbank to the game. The problem is, everyone can debate whether or not it hurts or hinders his development by playing 12 minutes a night in the NHL or whether he goes to juniors and plays 25+ minutes a night but dominates. IMO, by dominating in juniors it is hurting his development because he learns to get away with things he cannot do at the pro level and will rely on his skills to make up for that rather than positioning for example. The idea place for him to go would be our AHL affiliate, but obviously he can’t go there where we can keep an eye on him and have him work on things within our system. It really is an unfortunate situation with our minor league system and that needs to be addressed next year if possible…
