How many potential Team Canada players were on the ice when the Ducks and Penguins matched up their top lines on Tuesday?
Well, there was Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, and Scott Niedermayer for the Ducks, while the Penguins could boast center Sidney Crosby and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury, not to mention second-line center Jordan Staal.
Getzlaf and Crosby are considered locks for the Canadian team that is expected to defend home turf in February’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver, but Perry (above) is stating a case with six goals in his past four games and 10 in 13 games this season.
He potted two in a 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh at Honda Center, and his early season production hasn’t gone unnoticed by Crosby.
“He’s a great player,” Crosby said. “I was lucky enough to play with him in World Juniors. He’s got a lot of skill. He’s a dangerous player out there.”
Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman has a myriad of pure goal scorers to choose from, but the 6-foot-3, 206-pound Perry would offer a certain grit and nose for the net that could make him appealing.
Yzerman suggested in a recent interview that he is open to selecting younger players on the squad, and Perry, 24, certainly fits that description.
Olympic rosters are expected to be announced at the end of the year.
“He’s making a strong case for the Olympic team,” Crosby said. “He deserves all the credit he gets.”
Perry’s certainly been our MVP so far this season…
Yeah that’s nice. Even though I was born and raised in Canada, I’ll be cheering for my adopted country. And Team USA is one team that shouldn’t be under estimated.
I am so glad that Sid the Kid approves of our Perry.
Come on, who cares what Sid thinks.
Us Ducks fans know we have some very good players, if not great players in Getzy, Perry and Bobby…it is just the media bias never talks about them.
To be honest with you, I have never been impressed by Sid. He did nothing last night to impress me, except for that last save when his goalie was out of place, but most or all of our guys would do the same thing.
Just my opinon.
Perry has been amazing and it was good to see him get a goal doing what he does best: getting gritty a goal by parking his keister right in front of Fleury.
As for Crosby, our boys did a great job shutting him down but his big play last night was stacking the invisible pads at the corner LW side of the net and blocking Scotty’s puck from going into the back of the net.
I’m with you Lynne!!! Who gives a rats behind what that crybaby “Cindy” says or thinks. To me, it’s terribly sad that the hockey universe seems to revolve around this “poster boy” at the expense of a lot of better talent.
And yes, I’m disgruntled. I wanted to jump on the ice last nite and B-slap him after the first period… What the “H” could he be complaining about? Did Buttman’s NHL promise him more than 4 PPs per period from the Pennsylvania Strippers?
Oh joy, the NHL poster boy approves of Corey Perry. STOP THE PRESSES!!!!
Seriously?
Who cares?
