NEWARK, N.J. — In addressing the fallout from his comments about being a backup to Jonas Hiller, Ducks goalie
Jean-Sebastien Giguere wanted to make one thing clear going forward.
He’s not retiring.
In the interest of getting this post up quickly, we’ll briefly highlight what Giguere said following today’s morning skate at Prudential Center. A separate detailed post will be here later as both the veteran and Ducks coach Randy Carlyle discussed the situation with the media.
Doing a fair bit of damage control, Giguere said he was being facetious when he told the L.A. Daily News on Monday that “I’d rather retire than be a backup.”
“Let’s be clear with something,” he said today. “I’m not about to retire. That was kind of being sarcastic on my part a little bit. What I really mean by that is I’m not having fun not playing. I’m not going to just stay on the bench and collect my money and say, ‘It’s OK. It’s no big deal.’
“I’m all set. I don’t need to make any more money and stuff like that. That’s just not in my nature. I’m competitive. I want to play.”
Giguere, who’s returning after missing six games because of a strained groin muscle, also indicated that he isn’t seeking a trade and merely wants a shot at winning his old job back from Hiller. Hiller has started nine of the last 10 games.
“I want to be part of this team,” said Giguere, who’s 0-2-1 with a 3.64 goals-against average in four games played this season. ”I wanted to be a No. 1 here in Anaheim. This is the team I’ve been playing for the last 10 years. I absolutely love playing here. I think this team has great potential. I want to be here.”
Hiller is expected to get the start tonight against New Jersey but Giguere figures to play at some point on the Ducks’ four-game road trip, particularly with games in Columbus and Detroit on back-to-back nights.
Here’s the expected line combinations and defense pairings for tonight against the Devils:
Bobby Ryan-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry
Joffrey Lupul-Saku Koivu-Teemu Selanne
Mike Brown-Todd Marchant-Petteri Nokelainen
Evgeny Artyukhin-Ryan Carter-George Parros
Scott Niedermayer-Nick Boynton
Ryan Whitney-James Wisniewski
Brendan Mikkelson-Steve Eminger
Oh, now he’s doing damage control…
In my book, I feel like the damage has already been done. There’s no “do-overs”
What he has done so far to deserve to be No.1 goalie?
The guy who can’t stop a puck wants to be a starter.
He is lucky his contract is guaranteed, otherwise he would be a starter in some minor league team.
Professionals don’t become distractions.
I don’t think Jiggy is being a whiner. He’s a class guy, and has done a lot for this franchise. He’s just been frustrated over the latter part of last season and now the start of this one. Following the loss of his father, he lost his focus and confidence. In the throws of a playoff race the team couldn’t afford to let him work himself back into shape, and Hiller has earned the starting job. Now he’s battling injuries too. I think he would just like a chance to play and see if he can regain that starter’s job. If the opportunity presents itself, let’s see what he can do. Go Ducks!
He was asked a question and he answered it. Hiller was sitting right next to him when he said it. There’s no story here.
If there’s no story here Hegemo, why can you find it on every hockey news outlet and why is Coach Carlyle stepping up to help Jiggy spin it?
Because the media loves a quote!
Yep.
Hoornstra:
“How do you respond when you see your name as the subject of trade rumors?”
Giguere:
“Something needs to happen. You get a guy like Hiller that’s going to be a free agent at the end of the year and myself, making the money that I’m making, either he’s leaving or I’m leaving. I’d rather retire than be a backup goalie. I want to play; that’s when I have fun. Right now this is not fun. I’m looking forward to having fun at some point at some time. I’m not sure what’s going to happen, but it’s going to happen.”
All of that turns into GIGUERE THREATENS RETIREMENT IF HE DOESN’T GET HIS WAY because writers know there’s a certain segment of their readership that wants to hear that crap, true or not.
People with preconceptions always find what they’re looking for, backcheck.
He needs to stop whinning. He hasnt played well in 2 years and thinks he deserves to be the starter? How about you play well in the games you get in to first cause you haven’t played well yet this season.
anybody buying his lame story?
I agree with Alisa and Backcheck - the damage has been done, And someone told him there is no guarantee he can be traded.
Stuff always goes on behind the scenes and that is where it should stay. I don’t care if it is players not supporting the coach or a used to be starting goal tender having to take a back up position - keep it in the locker room - not in the news!
Suck it up Giggy… you have to learn to keep your trap shut, and learn to be a TEAM Player. I heard goalies have big Egos, and Giggy, there’s a reason you said that faux paux!
I agree with BB: Keep it in the locker room!
Quite frankly I don’t pay good money for season seats because someone enjoys living in Orange County and is racking in the dough for a position they’re lost. His contract was a mistake, it was too much for too long.
If he was into the game, playing winning and having fun like he said and not the cash, I would respect him if he volunteered to renegotiate a contract that isn’t sustainable with his lack of performance.
But he isn’t stupid, he’s not going to do that… then again we’re not stupid either, we see it for what it is. Ego comes before the team. Let him fight for the position, fine… but at one point this BS has got to stop.
