Rich Chere of the Newark Star-Ledger lays out the possibility of Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer returning to the New Jersey Devils if the Ducks fall out of playoff contention and need to start rebuilding at the trade deadline.
Niedermayer won three Stanley Cups with the Devils before signing with the Ducks in 2005. His brother, Rob, signed a one-year, $1-million deal with New Jersey in September after spending the last six seasons with the Ducks. The two won the Cup together with Anaheim in 2007.
There are interesting comments made by Niedermayer in the article but there’s one thought to this. Why would the prized defenseman be eager to leave after signing with the Ducks this off-season without seriously considering any other offers?
Just asking.
Anything is possible. I’ll never bust a reporter’s chops for asking a question. That’s part of the job. And it is an interesting question.
First some history. When Scot signed here, Burke promised that we’d never trade him unless he asked for a trade. I suspect that agreement is quid pro quo or reciprocal. Scot won’t play out his contract and go UFA.
New GM Bob Murray has honored our part of the gentleman’s agreement.
So for discussion sake, if we’re still in 14th place nearing the trade deadline and New Jersey or maybe Vancouver is looking like a legitimate Cup contender, it’s conceivable Scot might ask for a trade to either team.
Come the deadline, if Cap calls a news conference, I wouldn’t assume he’s been traded. It might be to announce he’s running for Congress. You never till you know with Cap.
I wouldn’t put too much stock into what Scotty said. That’s just Scotty. The way he talks and thinks. Very nonchalant. There’s never anything to read into or make more of than what it is at face value.
Could it happen? Sure it could. And he acknowledges that. But there’s not once in the article that he says he would like to be moved if the Ducks aren’t in a playoff position.
The Cap is always politically correct, making sure not to cause outrage and/or offend anyone.
The Ducks’ place is not a happy place anymore, and Scotty may leave or retire. Some Murray’s statement may irritate players even more. Our coach cannot coach, that’s how I see it. .
Let’s face it guys and gals…. every team has to go through a cycle of just out right sucking! And we’re seeing it now with the Ducks. But unlike teams that hit the top and tumbled down (Carolina or Tampa Bay), the Ducks still retain most of their offensive players that could make a difference, yet nothing is happening in scoring.
Example, Teemu the elder skatesman could conceivably surpass Corry Perry as our number 1 scorer. I’m just going to the games, scratching my head and will at least enjoy good hockey, even if its not my team playing it.
