Quick hits from Tuesday’s practice

November 17th, 2009, 2:37 pm · 21 Comments · posted by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

Some quick hits from Tuesday’s practice …

Despite landing in Southern California from Pittsburgh at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Ducks held an early afternoon practice.

Coach Randy Carlyle said part of it was to make up for not practicing Sunday, and the other was simply to “improve our overall execution level.”

Saku Koivu (groin-muscle) skated on his own and then for about 15 minutes in practice before leaving the ice.  Ryan Carter (foot) did not skate …

Without Koivu and Carter, Carlyle appears to be still experimenting with the second, third and fourth line combinations. We’ll have more on that later…

One minor league note to pass along is that forwards Matt Beleskey, Troy Bodie and defenseman Brett Festerling were re-assigned from San Antonio of the American Hockey League to the Toronto Marlies, and forward Ryan Donally was re-assigned to Bakersfield of the East Coast Hockey League.

The moves were made to get the players more playing time, as the Ducks do not have an AHL affiliate this season …

The line rushes were …

Bobby Ryan-Ryan Getzlaf-Corey Perry

Evgeny Artyukhin-Petteri Nokelainen-Teemu Selanne

Kyle Calder-Todd Marchant-Joffrey Lupul

Mike Brown-Erik Christensen-George Parros

Please do not play Brookbank to sit for an entire period.

  • ClippinWings says:

    Strange lines.

If you are trying to spread the offense, neutering your second line and not spreading the wealth from your first doesn’t seem the best way to handle it.

a better 2.5 lines would be:

    Brown-Getzlaf-Perry
    Calder-Nokelainen-Selanne
    Ryan-Marchant-Lupul
    Artyukhin-Christensen-Parros

at least you reward Brown who has been playing his heart out.

    when Carter & koivu return:

    Calder-Getzlaf-Perry
    Brown-Koivu-Selanne
    Ryan-Carter-Lupul
    Artyukhin-Marchant-Parros

run the top 3 lines at like 20:00, 18:00, 16:00 respectively. (could even swap the 2nd and 3rd TOI depending on performance.)

    • ClippinWings says:

      oops.

forgot Nokelainen in my second group:

      Calder-Getzlaf-Perry
      Brown-Koivu-Selanne
      Ryan-Carter-Lupul
      Nokelainen-Marchant-Parros

Scratch Artyukhin till he remember how to hit.

I love the idea of thinning out an already-thinned-out offense. Great coaching.

  • Randy says:

Good call Marc. Another example of RC’s ability to adjust and to, as he puts it, “put people in places where they have best chance to succeed”.

No worries though, if RC stays true to form, the line combos will last……oooooooo………. about 1/2 a period.

Injuries can never be predicted BUT, wouldn’t Ebbett appear to be a great fit on the 2nd line.

  • czhokej says:

The team is a mess. If we continue to change line combos till March, it will be even worse. Change the system first. We have to play organized games, starting with disciplined defense.

  • backcheck says:

Why break up Lupul & Selanne? Hasn’t Coach always said the value of having Todd Marchant is that he can play anywhere in the lineup? So why isn’t Todd centering Loops & Teemu?

Is this a sign Coach is trying too hard? Out thinking himself instead of doing the obvious?

I drop Ryan “Hothead Hockey” Getzlaf to Parros line. If Getzy wants to be an enforcer at least he’ll have Parros to bail him out when guys like soft Joe Thornton and little ole’ Bill Guerin kick his butt.

    • The Hegemo says:

I agree that Carlyle needs to use the ice time hammer on Getzlaf. Nothing else is getting through to that kid.

As for Lupul, he’s pretty much an offensive nonfactor on the left side. They gave him a quarter of the season to do something with it and he never really caught on. I like the idea of the Ryan-whoever-Lupul line on paper, if they can get enough ice time. Once Koivu’s back I’d put Marchant between them to help in keeping possession of faceoffs and keeping them honest defensively.

      • backcheck says:

Ryan & Loops on the same line? It’s an interesting idea Hegemo but lack of speed on the wings concerns me. Not even sayin’ it couldn’t work. Just two of our slower guys on the same line. Still Bobby Ryan got it going skating alongside Parros last season.

Interesting idea. At least until we get Koivu back. I like it better than Teemu alongside R2 & Noky.

Lupul seems like a 3rd line, 2nd PP unit guy to me anyway. Way to streaky and slow to be on the top 6.

      • Your Mom says:

I like your idea for those two, with Marchy in the middle.
And then to the left of the Finns, reward Brown for his effort (and he is better at defensive responsibilities). Nokie or R2 may also benefit at that left side depending upon situation. Too bad Christensen sucks.

  • czhokej says:

Even though it was nice to see Marchant score a couple of nice goals, I do not see him as a playmaker. RC tried him to center the second line last season, and it did not work well. Eventually he moved Carter there and it looked better. Hopefully Koivu or Carter will be available. Getz, with one of the hardest wrist shot in the league should be moving to the slot more often and operate around the net, instead always trying to stay on the periphery and pass the puck. Teemu and Koivu (and others too) lose pucks too easily and too often, maybe because we do not skate and do not move into open positions to receive a pass.

    • backcheck says:

No way cz. You sign a guy. You use him in situations that call for the reasons you signed him. The fact that Marchant has scored a couple recently is one of the reasons you move him up not to mention the fact he’s got wheels and give and go with Teemu.

  • DUKFAN says:

I think we need to really let em hear us cheering Thursday,,,hopefully an early goal will get them skating all shift instead of the first 10 seconds (exceptions to Marchant and Brown) those two have been pretty hard after it…I like backchecks lines tho…..something has to click…funny how they got together so easily it seemed last spring….we can’t wait that long to get out of this ditch

  • DUKFAN says:

Brown Marchant and Teemu on the same line might be too quick to stop for a lot of teams,,,even if only used at times….

Thank God Carlyle decided to skate them hard today, despite getting home at 1:30am this morning. They looked far to full of energy against the Pens. Sounds good…..work them hard RC….wear them down. Don’t let those snot nosed kids get too full of themselves. You show them coach…..don’t let them ever forget….you’re the boss. Force them to keep playing a system that every team has learned to adapt to. You were a defenceman….stuck with a group of offensive minded players. Don’t let that get you down Randy. Force them to play YOUR way. remember….under every thoroughbred racehorse is a basic plowhorse waiting to muck it up just for you. And what’s even better….you have 2 years left on your contract….so even if the fans….and players call for your sacking, nothing will happen. You’re safe to do whatever you want. Hell, if you could cripple Getzlaf or Ryan ….just to get your point across, even better.

The above was sarcasm, Randy Carlyle. If I was your boss, you’d be tending your garden on Thursday, not screaming at your charges from behind the benches of the home bench.

    • Marc says:

      I love it, Paul.

    • erikshunn says:

Paul, if you play sloppy, undisciplined hockey…expect to skate. That’s the way it is at every level, starting at midget/pee-wee. Don’t take it so personally. I’m 100% sure all the players expected this.

Paul, which players are calling for the coach’s job? Please elaborate on that.

Carlyle is the most successful coach in the team’s history, and has NEVER has a losing season as a head coach at any level. When the team is winning, he deflects all praise to his players. When they are losing, he takes all the blame. But I’m sure you know better. Who would you rather have coaching the team? What “system” would you like to see them play?

Oh and Carlyle was an offensive defenseman for most of his career. It wasn’t until he was old and broken down that he started paying more attention to his own zone.

Go ahead and pile on the coach now. The team is struggling, and all I see are rats fleeing what they perceive as a sinking ship. Just remember, you are all welcome back on the bandwagon when the team starts winning again.

  • John says:

IMO Murph’s gotta go along with Carlyle. They’re both stuck in a time warp.

  • Paul says:

“Paul, which players are calling for the coach’s job? Please elaborate on that”

    Can’t….heard it in the locker room,during a summer pick-up game…. from 2 players. And yes….I do play.

“Who would you rather have coaching the team? ”

Hmmmm….Ted Nolan, Peter Laviolette,….someone who is more of a “players” coach.

……you are all welcome back on the bandwagon when the team starts winning again.”

Hmmmm….I was there back in ‘93. Where were you? I remember the bad times when our roster didn’t have this kind of talent on it. Bandwagon? Not so much. And as for the part where Carlyle takes the blame in public….nice. It’s the behind closed doors that he shows his “true” self. I’m sure everyone here knows someone that acts all nice and friendly in public…..and behind closed doors is an absolute monster……that’s what I’ve heard about our coach. Never having a losing season is not a reason to keep someone if the players are tuning him out. Ask the Pittsburgh Penquins. Their coach took them to the CUP finals the year before…..but the players found him more of a hinderance than a help….sp he was let go. Bylsma comes in….and look a run…all the way to the Cup finals again…only to win it this time. Would they have under their former coach….no one knows. But their management didn’t want to take that chance. Why does ours?

    • erikshunn says:

First off…thanks for the reply…seriously. I came across as rude in my initial post. Didn’t want you to think it was personal…my bad. Just a little frustrated at the situation (as I’m sure we all are).

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on the Carlyle situation. I have never heard grumblings from players past or present about him, and you would think now would be the time that more players would be willing to throw him under the bus. I have faith in the guy, he brought the ultimate prize home to Orange County. That buys him more time than one set back IMO. He has less to work with this season, I just hope he finds a way to overcome it.

I don’t think a “players coach” is the answer for an undisciplined team. I’m sure you know the reason why Nolan was pretty much blacklisted from the NHL for nearly a decade. That’s a pretty serious mark against his credibility. And his team all but quit on him in Long Island. He is the classic retread, and much like Barry Melrose, I think he’s not suited for post-lockout coaching. Laviolette plays such a passive style that I don’t think he would be able to make it work with the current players. I would prefer him over Ted Nolan though. And I’ll give you credit for answering the question. Everyone wants Carlyle fired, but nobody wants to address who his replacement should be.

For the record, I have been following the Ducks since day one. Been following/playing hockey since I was a kid waaaay back when in the 80s. I remember the bad days when the Ducks were a flat out embarrassment, not to mention a total pushover. Sadly, a lot current fans are bandwagon jumpers. They have no connection to the “bad old days” of the Mighty Ducks.

  • John says:

    I admit it. I’m a bandwagoner. Been on it since . . . 1994.
