Joe Thornton scored in the third period to lift San Jose over the Ducks, 3-2, on Saturday night at Honda Center.
San Jose recorded its NHL-leading 36th point and 16th victory. It has earned points in 14 of its past 15 games.
The Ducks fell to 1-1 on a seven-game home stand.
Thornton ripped a snap shot from the left circle that beat Jonas Hiller on the far side at 8:49 of the third period just after Teemu Selanne exited the penalty box.
Ryan Whitney tied it at 2 with a slapshot with 14 seconds remaining in the second period during a Ducks’ five-on-three advantage after San Jose’s Kent Huskins and Douglas Murray took holding and interference penalties, respectively.
The Sharks scored twice in a span of 2:44 in the second on goals by Ryan Clowe and Dany Heatley, who knocked in a rebound in front for a power play goal and his league-leading 18th goal of the season.
James Wisniewski gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead early in the second with a slap shot from the point with Heatley in the penalty box for tripping.
Corey Perry had an assist to extend his points streak to 14 games.
Predictable result. Even though Sharks played back to back games, the gap in talent level between two teams is so deep that Ducks loss was expected.
By the way, what’s up with Bob Murray’s desire to ship out players who don’t perform up to expectations? Ryan Whitney finally scored a goal….any takes on his whopping salary?
Predictable result? I didn’t notice you predict anything. Anybody can post-dict.
Sharks best players were better than our best players. We can wish and hope for secondary scoring but it just isn’t there.
Teemu’s goals are coming on the 1st unit PP. Lupul is out with a bad back but is far too streaky to be relied upon for consistent scoring.
I liked Koivu-R2-Selanne and found myself wondering why we haven’t that line sooner. Kinda comical when R2 stepped in for Koivu against Joslin and immediately 2 Sharks came to Joslin’s aid. I was half expecting to see 3 Sharks swim in ice.
I hope that line is given some time to see if they gel. R2’s speed, net presence and work on the boards and corners seem a great fit for Saku & Teemu.
Any loss is disappointing but our guys played a pretty good game.
I said to my friend - I like the Rs, Saku and Teemu line.
I’m hoping the big man can provide the help that Teemu needs. I like his size and he has the speed to go with it. They were good and I think with a bit of time together this line could begin to make a difference for our team.
2 goals from the defensemen, which makes it total five for the season.
14 shots from the point - significant improvement. Better screening.
3-2 loss - disappointing. Getz - 1 shot on goal (Jumbo Joe 6).
During 1 shift Getz and Perry collided with each other twice behind Nabokov. RC should mention this to Getz.. San Jose defense was organized better.
I did not predict anything, but I agree with OR that the result was predictable, simply based on the past results and stats.
R2 shoots left, maybe he could be better fit on the left wing there. All the wingers on our first two lines otherwise shoot right.
Europeans grow up playing the opposite wing from their shooting side.
The European method, sticks facing in and away from the boards give the winger more net to shoot at.
The NA or Canadian method, sticks facing the boards, give the winger the advantage along the boards and when backchecking because the play is on the forehand or strong side.
I agree with your other point, we can use another left handed shot on the first two lines.
BTW, if the result to sporting events is predictable why aren’t there more millionaire sports bettors? Then again, if the result is predictable why watch? You already know how it ends.
Of course ice rings in Europe are 13 feet wider.
I’m just happy they didn’t get smoked. Finally Whit gets a goal…only 20 games into it…sigh. Hopefully sighs of good things to come but i’m not going to get my hopes up until the end of this homestand. GO DUCKS!!!
How’s this year’s NHL draft looking?
We look and play like a smallish european hockey club out there. Goaltending is below average at best. Defense is a horror story. Only 1 line capable of scoring goals. Coaching is major problem -management doesn’t have the sense to know better. We’ll be lucky to get 25 wins this season.
Geez John, “Coaching is a major problem -management doesn’t have the sense to know better” if that ain’t the truth.
Part of the frustration for me is the comments coming from Bob Murray and Randy Carlyle.
Murray and Carlyle are protecting each other and/or they are both stuck in the past!
Where in the heck are the owners in this whole mess. It’s got to be hurting their pocket books now and will only get worse if things aren’t changed. I don’t care if their known to be “hands off” - it’s time to change that too.
Toss Mark Mitera in the mix and our D looks very good in 3-4 years.
Interesting to note Brendan Mikkelson is the first guy to make a relatively seamless move up through the ranks during Randy Carlyle’s tenure.
