Fallout from Ducks’ former AHL partner

November 24th, 2009, 10:30 am · 2 Comments · posted by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

The Ducks’ quasi-partnership with the Phoenix Coyotes’ American Hockey League affiliate did not work out as planned.

Turns out it didn’t work out for Phoenix, either.

The Coyotes announced Monday that they fired San Antonio Rampage coach Greg Ireland. No reason was given for his dismissal, according to the Arizona Republic.

The Ducks, who do not have an AHL affiliate this season, had an arrangement with the Rampage in which a handful of their prospects would play in San Antonio, including Matt Beleskey, Brett Festerling and Troy Bodie.

But the Ducks’ farmhands struggled to get playing time, and last week the club transferred several players to the Toronto Marlies. The Ducks also have a majority of their prospects with the Bakersfield Condors.

The lack of a real farm team sure isn’t doing much to help the Ducks’ on ice fortunes, although it does save them some money. Their two goalies, Pogge and Pielmeier are playing in the ECHL against inferior competition, thus may be regressing rather than improving. I’m not sure how many of their oher minor leaguers are truly prospects (maybe Festerling, Mitera, Salcido, Sexton?), but anyone who is a viable prospect probably isn’t going to improve much this year getting marginal ice time on someone else’s farm team:-(

This situation certainly contributes way more to the problem than the solution for the Ducks woes this season…

Perhaps it is time for the Ducks to look into buying a controlling interest in an AHL team so they can control their player’s development. I don’t know if that is feasible but partnering with another NHL franchise doesn’t look to be working out for them.
