Ducks ‘expected more’ from Lindstrom

October 3rd, 2008, 1:02 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer
The Ducks surrendered what will now turn out to be a seventh-round selection in the 2010 NHL entry draft for the chance to see if Swedish winger Joakim Lindstrom might develop into a top-six forward.

If that happens, it does not appear it will be with the Ducks.

The Chicago Blackhawks on Friday claimed Lindstrom on waivers, after the Ducks had attempted to pass him through in order to send him to their American League affiliate, the Iowa Chops. Read the rest of this entry »

Ducks lose Lindstrom to Chicago

October 3rd, 2008, 9:57 am by Dan Wood, Staff writer

The Chicago Blackhawks on Friday claimed left wing Joakim Lindstrom off waivers from the Ducks.

Lindstrom, 24, came to the Ducks in an off-season trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets, but failed to earn a roster spot in training camp.

Goaltender David LeNeveu, defenseman Brennan Evans and winger Josh Green, whom the Ducks had also placed on waivers Thursday with the intent of assigning them to their American League affiliate, cleared waivers and will go to the Iowa Chops.

The Ducks announced Thursday that LeNeveu, Evans, Green, Lindstrom and wingers Drew Miller, Troy Bodie and T.J. Trevelyan had been assigned to Iowa. Miller, Bodie and Trevelyan were not subject to waivers.

Twenty-seven players, including injured forwards Brad Larsen, Ryan Donally and Matt Beleskey, remain on the Ducks’ training-camp roster. The NHL regular-season roster limit is 23 players, although the Ducks are more likely to carry 22 when they open the regular season on the road Thursday night against the San Jose Sharks.

Ducks roster taking shape

The Ducks on Thursday cut their training-camp roster to 27 players, four more than the NHL regular-season maximum, with the assignment of goaltender David LeNeveu, defenseman Brennan Evans and wingers Drew Miller, Josh Green, Joakim Lindstrom, Troy Bodie and T.J. Trevelyan to their American League affiliate, the Iowa Chops.

LeNeveu, Evans, Green and Lindstrom are subject to waivers. Other NHL teams have the right to claim any of them until 9 a.m. Friday. Those who clear waivers will go to Iowa.

The moves left the Ducks with apparent clarity on defense and in goal, where incumbents Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Jonas Hiller remain. Rookie Brett Festerling appears to have won a job on a blue line that now includes only six other players, veterans Scott Niedermayer, Chris Pronger, Francois Beauchemin, Kent Huskins, Steve Montador and Ken Klee.

The Ducks are still carrying 18 forwards, including left wing Brad Larsen, who appears likely to begin the season on the injured-reserve list because of an apparently abdominal injury. In addition, Matt Beleskey, who played junior with the Belleville Bulls in the Ontario Hockey League last season, is recovering from off-season shoulder surgery, and Ryan Donally has been nursing a hip injury.

Ducks starting to build?

September 30th, 2008, 11:30 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

None too happy with his team’s exhibition performance two nights earlier in a 5-4, shootout loss to the visiting Vancouver Canucks, Ducks coach Randy Carlyle was considerably more pleased with Tuesday’s 2-1, shootout triumph over the Kings at Staples Center.

“We played harder as a team,” Carlyle said. “Our work ethic as a group was to a higher level, and that’s what we’ve asked our players. Even though it is pre-season, and we know these games don’t mean anything in the standings, they mean a lot to the start of our season. It’s not like you can just turn a switch on when it’s opening night. You have to build to that, and hopefully this is the start of our building.”

The Ducks’ effort featured 22 saves from goaltender Jonas Hiller, a power-play goal by defenseman Kent Huskins, with an assist from newly obtained blue-liner Ken Klee, and the lone shootout conversion from Chris Kunitz. Read the rest of this entry »

Ten players trimmed from camp roster

September 29th, 2008, 12:55 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

The Ducks pared their training-camp roster to 35 players Monday by assigning eight to their American League affiliate, the Iowa Chops, and returning left wing Logan MacMillan and center Maxime Macenauer to their respective junior teams.

The Ducks sent goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur, defensemen Brian Salcido, Brendan Mikkelson, Ross Lupaschuk and John de Gray, and forwards Eric Boguniecki, Petteri Wirtanen and Michal Birner to Iowa. Read the rest of this entry »

Parros ready if needed

September 25th, 2008, 4:31 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

Right wing George Parros, who was not in the Ducks’ lineup, wasn’t quite sure what to make of all the extracurricular activity that took place in Wednesday night’s 6-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks in an NHL exhibition opener at Honda Center.

The teams, who meet again Friday night in San Jose, engaged in six fights, something that did not escape the notice of Parros (left), the Ducks’ resident heavyweight.

“Years ago, when I first started playing pro, pre-season was like a Wild West shootout, just like last night — five fights a game, and it was pretty ridiculous,” Parros said after Thursday’s practice at Anaheim Ice. “For some reason, the last couple of years, I think I’ve gotten in one or two-preseason fights. I don’t really know what governs that or what’s going on, but it seems like everyone around the league has been fighting a lot this year. Guys are antsy.” Read the rest of this entry »

Schneider still on hold

September 24th, 2008, 2:50 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

Ducks general manager Brian Burke spoke to Mathieu Schneider by telephone Wednesday, and the two agreed that the veteran defenseman will remain away from the club’s training camp for at least “a couple of more days,” the team said.

Burke has made no secret of the fact he is trying to trade Schneider - and his $5.625 million salary-cap hit - as a means of getting the Ducks beneath the NHL’s $56.7 million salary ceiling. The team is currently a shade more than $3 million above the limit. Read the rest of this entry »
