Ducks prospect Mark Mitera will probably get to the NHL sometime in the future. Canucks Ducks Hockey

One of the club’s older defenseman prospects, Mitera, 22, is resurrecting his career after a reconstructive surgery wiped out most of his senior season at the University of Michigan.

It’s been a circuitous path so far.

NHL.com caught up with Mitera, who is trying to make an impression with Bakersfield of the East Coast Hockey League after he couldn’t get decent playing time with San Antonio of the American Hockey League.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Mitera (seen here in a preseason game) was one of the last defenseman cut in training camp.

He is ranked fourth in Hockey’s Future list of top Ducks prospects, behind Luca Sbisa, Jake Gardiner and Peter Holland.

Mark Mitera is almost one year out from suffering a major setback in his hockey career. mitera

Next month will mark 12 months since Mitera (right) tore the ACL in his left knee on opening night for the University of Michigan. Where he will be playing on that anniversary is unknown, but being back on the ice is progress enough for the defenseman.

Unlike the other prospects, Mitera is coming off limited game experience because of the injury.

After surgery to repair the knee last November, he returned in late February for Senior Day and played eight games for the Wolverines, who were eliminated by Air Force in the NCAA Tournament.

Mitera then made his professional debut for Iowa of the American Hockey League, playing five games and picking up two assists.

“It was good to move on and keep playing games,” Mitera said by phone Tuesday. “It was good just to stay on the ice. Everything is a little faster, guys are stronger, but for the most part I adjusted pretty well.”
