Goalie prospect Pielmeier thriving

January 26th, 2010, 9:59 am by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

Ducks goaltending prospect Timo Pielmeier is quietly putting together a terrific season for the Bakersfield Condors, the club’s East Coast Hockey League affiliate. pielmeier

After sitting behind Justin Pogge on the depth chart at the beginning of the season, Pielmeier is tied for the ECHL lead in victories (18) and has a 2.80 goals-against average.

NHL.com did a nice feature on the 20-year-old German, who talked about his development in Germany through the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and his struggle to find a suitable style after playing for four different goalie coaches.

Pielmeier (shown here in the preseason) came to the Ducks along with center prospect Nick Bonino in the trade with San Jose for Travis Moen and Kent Huskins at last year’s trade deadline.

Ducks goaltending prospect Timo Pielmeier did all he could to help his team in Wednesday’s East Coast Hockey League All-Star game in Ontario.

Pielmeier turned away 12 of 14 shots for the National Conference in the second period, including two in impressive fashion.

The National Conference fell to the American Conference, 10-9, in a shootout.

Pielmeier was one of three Ducks prospects in the game. Shawn Weller and Eric Regan also played. All three play for the Bakersfield Condors.

Pielmeier is 10th in the ECHL with a 2.86 goals against average and third with 16 victories.

Another Condor, defenseman Sasha Pokulok, took second in the hardest shot competition with shots of 101.5 and 101.2 mph. He was the only player to have two shots in triple digits.

A.J. Thelen of Florida topped him with 101.9.

Ducks rookies beaten but take important steps

September 10th, 2009, 7:00 am by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

Alain Chainey didn’t sugar coat the performance of the Ducks’ rookies in Tuesday’s 5-0 loss to San Jose. holland1

Chainey, assistant director of amateur scouting, said the group was out of sync and looked tired.

“They’re young guys,” Chainey said by phone Wednesday before the team concluded rookie camp with the last of three games against San Jose’s rookies.

“It’s a big-time wake up call for them.”

Chainey, director of amateur scouting Martin Madden and the organization’s coaches will take away some positives, though.

The camp is intended for Ducks’ prospects to make an impression on coaches and management and get their feet wet in the organization’s system and philosophy.

General manager Bob Murray and David McNab, senior vice president of hockey operations, have watched some of the camp and will evaluate where to place players.

Some will be invited to the main camp that starts Sunday at Anaheim Ice. Most others will be sent back to their junior teams or placed in the minors.

Ducks prospect Bonino helps BU advance

March 18th, 2009, 9:46 am by Curtis Zupke, Staff writer

At least one Duck is playing deep into the postseason.

Well, okay, it will be a few years before Nick Bonino pulls on a Ducks jersey. But the highly regarded Ducks prospect has Boston University poised for a deep playoff run.

Bonino had a goal and an assist last Sunday as the top-ranked Terriers advanced to the Hockey East semifinals. BU will play Boston College on Friday at TD Banknorth Garden.

Bonino is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound sophomore forward. He became property of the Ducks in the trade with San Jose that also gave the Ducks goaltending prospect Timo Pielmeier for Travis Moen and Kent Huskins.

Bonino has 16 goals and 28 assists and is a team-leading plus-24 in 38 games.

Ducks re-tool in flurry of deals

March 4th, 2009, 6:21 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer
ANAHEIM — First-year Ducks general manager Bob Murray used a flurry of four deals before Wednesday’s NHL trade deadline to try to better position the club for the future while also maintaining this season’s Stanley Cup playoff hopes.

At a cost that included center Samuel Pahlsson, left wing Travis Moen and defensemen Steve Montador and Kent Huskins, each of whom stands to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, the Ducks landed potential top-six forward Erik Christensen from the Atlanta Thrashers, checking-type center Petteri Nokelainen from the Boston Bruins, “heart-and-soul” defenseman James Wisniewski from the Chicago Blackhawks and two promising prospects from the San Jose Sharks.

With the subtraction of Pahlsson, Moen and Huskins, as well as left wing Chris Kunitz, who went to the Pittsburgh Penguins last week in a trade for skilled defenseman Ryan Whitney, 14 players from the 2007 Stanley Cup champion Ducks are no longer in the organization. Twelve remain.

“Over the last few years, while chasing another Cup, we’ve let assets get away and gotten nothing for them,” Murray said. “We had to stop that. We’ve let enough assets go.”
