Ducks win wild one in Vancouver

April 2nd, 2009, 11:16 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer
VANCOUVER, British Columbia — The Ducks and Vancouver Canucks don’t appear to be on a Stanley Cup playoff collision course, at least for the first round. That’s probably just as well, at least for the blood pressure of coaches Randy Carlyle and Alain Vigneault.

For the second time this season, the teams engaged in a wildly entertaining, if less than artistic, affair Thursday night, this time at GM Place, with the Ducks gaining a 6-5, shootout victory.

After surrendering an early two-goal lead and then twice falling behind by a pair, the Ducks rallied to tie — before the end of the second period. Corey Perry, who scored once in regulation, was the lone shooter to find the mark in the shootout, beating Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo on the Ducks’ initial shot to reverse a 7-6, shootout victory by the Canucks in October.

“It was Halloween last time, and probably a late April Fool’s joke this time,” Ducks goalie Jonas Hiller said after making a huge glove save on Alex Burrows in the final round of the shootout. Read the rest of this entry »

Perseverance pays off for Ducks

March 11th, 2009, 11:12 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

ANAHEIM — Big contributions from newcomers Erik Christensen, Ryan Whitney and Petteri Nokelainen helped put the Ducks in position to gain a critical victory Wednesday night at Honda Center.

Team captain Scott Niedermayer, with huge assists from fellow veterans Chris Pronger and Todd Marchant, delivered it.

With the teams skating three aside, Niedermayer converted a breakaway 3:37 into overtime to produce a 4-3 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks that snapped a three-game losing streak.

Ducks likely to again call on Hiller

March 11th, 2009, 11:45 am by Dan Wood, Staff writer

ANAHEIM — Look for goaltender Jonas Hiller to make a second consecutive start Wednesday night when the Ducks face the Vancouver Canucks at Honda Center in what amounts to their latest last-gasp attempt to stay in the Stanley Cup playoff race.

Hiller registered 22 saves Sunday in a 3-2 loss to the visiting Minnesota Wild in his first start since Feb. 18 and just his second since Feb. 4.

While Ducks coach Randy Carlyle is always secretive about the identity of his starting goalie, indications at the morning skate were that Hiller would get the call.

Ducks focus on themselves

March 10th, 2009, 2:25 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

ANAHEIM — Among the many things that have not worked out for the Ducks this season is a recent stretch of schedule that had appeared to be favorable.

After having survived a season-high, six-game road swing with a 3-2-1 record, the Ducks returned home to face two opponents that had not only played the Kings the night or day before, but suffered tough losses.

The Ducks took advantage in neither case, dropping 3-2 decisions to the Dallas Stars on Friday night and Minnesota Wild on Sunday, absorbing a huge blow to their Stanley Cup playoff hopes in the process.

Ducks’ Brown ready to face former mates

March 10th, 2009, 1:44 pm by Dan Wood, Staff writer

ANAHEIM — Having nearly doubled his ice time since arriving in a Feb. 4 trade with the Vancouver Canucks, rookie right wing Mike Brown of the Ducks will have an opportunity to show his former employers what they gave up when the teams meet Wednesday night at Honda Center.

“I’ve never got to play a team that I came from, so it’s going to be pretty exciting,” Brown said after Tuesday’s practice. “You want to win those games. You want to prove you’re on a good team and you’re doing well, so hopefully we get the win.”

The Ducks, of course, need a victory primarily to keep their diminishing Stanley Cup playoff hopes alive.
